On Monday, August 23, 2021, Dr. Albert James Harris III, loving husband and father of two children passed away at age 87.
Al was born on February 26, 1934, in Macon, GA to Albert J. Harris, Jr., and Myrtice (Freeman) Harris. He received his master’s degree from the University of Alabama and his doctorate from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. On September 5, 1959, he married the love of his life, Mayme Walker in Milan, Tennessee. They raised two children, David and Kathryn, “Kat”. He was a beloved professor of theatre and playwriting at UT until his retirement. After retiring, he moved to Los Angeles to continue his interest in film and theatre life. But, regardless of theater or plays or the stage, his true love and dedication were for his family. The allure to be with his children and grandchildren led him ultimately to settle in Savannah.
Al had a passion for watching and directing live theatre. Among the hundreds of plays he directed, a few of his favorites were Into the Woods, Pippin, and Sweeney Todd. He was also an avid lover of animals, especially his Pugs, Prissy and Buddy. He loved a dirty martini and shrimp and grits. He was loved by many for his quick wit, gentle soul, and his kind and compassionate heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his two siblings, Kathryn and Bobby. He is survived by his wife, Mayme, his daughter Kat, son David (Alison) Harris, and his grandchildren, Lily and Ethan.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please perform a random act of kindness.
Low Country Cremation and Burial is serving the Harris family.
