Allen Griffin

Deacon Allen Griffin, age 94 was called home from labor reward on Friday, October 28, 2017 at Ogeechee Area Hospice after a short illness. Deacon Allen Griffin was born on February 11, 1923 in Reidsville to the late Jasper and Elizabeth Griffin. He was educated in Tattnall County, joined the Army in 1943 and retired from Civil Service at Fort Stewart after 30 years of service. He was a farmer and was joined in matrimony to Mrs. Lillian Smith Griffin on March 8, 1946. To this union, one daughter and one son was born. He joined Greater Bethel Church in Reidsville at an early age and later moved his membership to St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church in Reidsville where he served as long as his health permitted him to do so. Deacon Griffin served on several auxiliaries, a Chairman Deacon, a member of the Mason where he served as Grand Master and a member of the Christian Home Burial Society.  He is preceded in death by two brothers, Willie and Richard Lee Griffin and one granddaughter,Charity F. Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Lillian Smith Griffin of Collins; daughter, Carolyn Griffin Cobb; son, Melvin (Sandra) Smith of Collins; brother, Jasper Griffin, Jr. of Newark, New York; one grandchild, Patrick O’Neal Cobb; six great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Novella McKinnon of Claxton, Lorine Holmes of North Carolina, Corine Griffin of Marshville, NC. and Margie (Richard) Sharpe of Chicago, IL; brother-in-law, Thurmon (Lavern) Smith; several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday from the funeral home.  Funeral services will be conducted 11:00am Friday, November 3, 2017 from the St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church.  Interment will follow in the St. Williams Memory Gardens with military honors.

Pallbearers will be Craig Scott, James Smith, Willie Henry Smith, Earl Brown, Raymond, Smith, Herbert Smith.
