Ann Mozell Morris Carswell died on October 23, 2019 at Community Hospice House in Vidalia, Georgia. She was born on February 28, 1935, at her family's ancestral home in the Altamaha Community of Tattnall County, Georgia, to Paul Morris and Elizabeth McArthur Morris. Her early education was in Tattnall County, where she was chosen Miss Reidsville High School and was valedictorian of that school's Class of 1953. She attended South Georgia College and was a graduate of Valdosta State University as well as of the Air Force's Air Command and Staff College. In her 36-year career as an employee of the Department of Defense, she worked at Army, Navy, and Air Force installations. Later, she worked at the Valdosta State University Langdale College of Business. At the same time, she assisted with and later managed her family's timber growing operation. A Certified Tree Farmer, she was a member of Forest Farmers and the Longleaf Alliance. She was also a private pilot. She was very social, and was a member of the Clearwater Supper Club, as well as a number of heritage societies, including Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames 17th Century, The Colonial Dames, Colonial Dames of America, United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Jamestowne Society, and Magna Charta Dames. She was a member of Pearson's Chapel United Methodist Church and an affiliate member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church. She worked closely with the local VFW Chapter in the establishment of the Tattnall County Veterans Memorial Park, and spent several years conducting research to compile a list of Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War veterans from Tattnall County to be named on the monuments. Everyone who knew “Miss Ann” would say that she was the epitome of grace, elegance, class, and beauty. She was the consummate Southern lady. She was also highly intelligent and possessed a near encyclopedic knowledge of a broad range of subjects. She never stopped learning. She loved travel, good food, museums, gardening, heritage societies, history, genealogy, and most of all, her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, William Hamilton Carswell, her parents, and a brother, Mac Southwell.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Carswell Howard, and her fiance, Robert Quitman Wilkes, Junior of Reidsville; her brother, Johnny William Southwell of Valdosta; her niece Rogni Southwell of Seattle, WA; a host of cousins; and her beloved faithful feline companion, Scooter Rabbit.
Visitation will be held Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Reidsville United Methodist Church with the funeral service to follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Joyce-McArthur Cemetery located at 5830 Old River Road.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the wonderful staff and healthcare providers at Community Hospice for the loving care they provided for Miss Ann during her final days and hours.The family also wishes to express love and gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff at the Meadows Regional Tommy and Shirley Strickland Cancer Center and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for the many years of care, love and friendship they provided for Miss Ann.
