Reidsville GA,
Bennie “Ben” D. Barfield, age 81, passed away on Thursday January 24, 2019 at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Center after a short illness. The Toombs County native grew up around the Vidalia airport area of the county. After graduating from high school, Ben moved to the Golden Isles Area where he began his career with an automobile dealer in the parts department. In his free time, while early in his career, he developed a love for racing; specifically racing Corvettes. During his life, he owned two Corvettes of his own. His career took him from the coast of Georgia to the big city; moving to Douglasville to manage the parts department for a larger dealership. The move to Douglasville proved to be beneficial in more than one way. Ben met, who would become, the future Mrs. Barfield at the job in 1987. The couple later wed in 1991. A top performing manager in the parts department, his sales goals earned him numerous trips to various exotic locations across the globe. An additional passion was his love for cycling. He rode in B.R.A.G. (Bike Ride Across Georgia) since 2003, only missing 2 years during the time he broke his hip on 2 separate occasions. Even into his late 70’s he would routinely ride his bike 100 miles a day. When not enjoying the open road on his bike, he took great pride in his home. Most sunny days you would find him working hours on end in his yards. A man with a great passion for life and someone who enjoyed everything life had to offer, he will be sorely missed by many. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, George J. & Essie Barfield and 2 brothers, D. Edgar Barfield and Amos Barfield.
Left to carry the memories of a life well lived are his wife of 28 years, Betty Barfield of Reidsville; 3 daughters, Rhonda (Russell) Flanders of Warner Robins GA, Annette Barfield of Kite GA, and Lori Ann Barfield of Virginia; one brother, George W. (Mimi) Barfield of Ft. Lauderdale FL; two sisters, Irpeel (Thelbert) Blaxton of Vidalia GA and Joyce (Jack) Devitt of Hephzibah GA; three grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.
The family plans an informal gathering of immediate family to celebrate Ben’s life on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at his beloved home in Reidsville. The family appreciates positive thoughts and prayers during this time of grief while respecting their needed privacy.
Low Country Cremation & Burial is serving the Barfield family.
