Bernice M. Fleming

August 30, 1927 — September 25, 2016

Reidsville, GA

Bernice M. Fleming, age 89, entered into eternal rest on Sunday September 25, 2016 after a long and heroic battle with cancer; surrounded by her loving family.  The Reidsville native lived her life here in the county she was born in.   As a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, she devoted countless hours in service to her Lord and community.   Following closely behind her devotion to God was her family; whom she adored.   As a mother of 11 children, much of her time was spent in preparation of the family meals.  As such, it seemed only natural that her career outside of the home would be in providing meals for others.  She was a long time employee at Tattnall Memorial Hospital in the dietary department.   In between caring for the children and her job she did manage to carve out time for herself.  Her hobbies included growing roses and other flowers, playing spades, shopping trips to Wal-Mart, and daily devotions from the Bible.  No one could question her love for her family.  Growing up, the children recount how their mother was the “enforcer” of the household; commanding respect and imparting discipline as needed.  As they grew, the children learned to recognize that this role was a labor of love and instilled in them values that they carry to this day.  Love of family did not cease with blood kinship; Bernice even adored her daughters-in-law.  In everything she attempted, Bernice was an expert at with one exception, DRIVING.   Passengers with Ms. Bernice definitely needed their seatbelts; as she always drove with two feet.  There were permanent impressions on the dashboard of her vehicle from passengers attempting to hold on for dear life.  She truly loved life and was loved by all she touched; a Great Spirit, now returned to be with the Lord God.   She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kaiser H. Fleming Sr.; son, Charles Fleming; four grandchildren, Tawanda Bennett, Herbert Hobbs, Corell Fleming, and Antonio Corouthers; a great grandchild, Traniah Fleming.

Left to mourn her memory and carry on are her sons, Tyrone (Gloria) Hobbs of Washington D.C., Obie Hobbs of Richmond VA, Kaiser (Vicki) Fleming of Glennville, Robert (Kadada) Fleming of Collins, George (Brenda) Fleming of Reidsville, Blake (Mary) Fleming of Savannah, and Adrian (Joyce) Fleming of Atlanta; daughters, Yvonne Venable of Washington D.C., Dorothy Renee Wright of Upper Marlboro MD, and Minerva (Sam) King of Reidsville; uncle, George Arnold of Detroit MI; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and a nephew; numerous other relatives, friends, and church family also survive.
