Brenda Gooding Cowart

April 22, 1943 — January 24, 2025

Collins

Brenda Joniece Gooding Cowart passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Memorial Health in Savannah after complications from surgery.  She had made Collins, GA home since retiring from the Chatham County Board of Education in Savannah, GA in 1997.  Brenda was born on April 22, 1943 in Savannah to John B. and Mildred C. Gooding.  She was a graduate of Savannah High School in 1961.  She then graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1963 in elementary education and Armstrong Atlantic State College with a Masters in Elementary Education.  Brenda also achieved a life time certificate for elementary education from the State of Georgia.  She taught at Calvary Baptist on Waters Ave for two years and then went to White Bluff School for thirty years, retiring in 1997.

Brenda was a member of Calvary Baptist Church from the age of 9 years old and about 20 years ago she moved her letter to Pine Grove Baptist Church in Collins.

God allowed her path to cross with James "Jim" B. Cowart and they were married on November 6, 1981.  She became involved in horses which Jim had been doing and ran a boarding facility on Grove Point Road in Savannah.  Brenda had never ridden until she met Jim and began going to shows with him.  She rode in several St. Patrick Day parades in Savannah.

After moving to Collins, she helped Jim in Cowart's Farm Fresh.  After retiring Brenda enjoyed staying home and watching tv and taking care of her animals, mostly cats.

Brenda is survived by her husband of 43 years, James "Jim" B. Cowart and her step children, James B. "Jim" B. Cowart and his wife, Mary Beth and their children, Martina and Zoey and Chris Cowart Gregory/Steven Smith and Chris's sons, Junior and L.J. and several cousins.

Brenda had requested that she have a close casket, no flowers, be buried beside her parents and only a scripture read at the graveside. I am complying with her request with the exception of the following:

Visitaton will be on Monday the 27th at 1:30pm and the Celebration of Life at 2:00pm at Low Country Cremation and Burial in Reidsville.  A short graveside service in Savannah at 11:00am on Tuesday the 28th at Hillcrest Abbey East on Wheaton Street.
