Bro. Larry Lee Spence Sr., a dedicated servant of the Lord, passed away on August 19, 2023, leaving behind a legacy rooted in faith and service. Born on April 17, 1941, in Toombs County, he was the son of the late Fred H. and Mary L. King Spence. He had lived in Tattnall County most of his life.
Throughout his career spanning over four decades, Bro. Larry served in the ministry, touching countless lives along the way. He selflessly dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of God and offering guidance to those in need. From his early years in local churches to his impactful tenure of 22 years at the Georgia State Prison, where he eventually retired as a Lieutenant, Bro. Spence embodied compassion and empathy. He also served his community of Reidsville as a Police Officer and head of the Water Works Department.
While his commitment to his ministry was unwavering, Bro. Larry held deep affections for three aspects of his life: the Lord being his foremost love, followed by his cherished family and an unyielding passion for fishing. His devotion to the Lighthouse Pentecostal Holiness Church was inspiring and served as a guiding light for those around him. He found solace in scripture and took solace in sharing its wisdom with others.
In addition to his religious endeavors, Bro. Spence took pride in serving his country as a member of the Georgia Army National Guard for 22 years. Rising through the ranks to become a Staff Sergeant, he displayed great courage and dedication during his military service. His unit was activated during both Desert Storm and Desert Shield, showcasing his unwavering commitment to protecting others.
He is survived by a loving family who are grateful for having shared their lives with him throughout his 59 years of marriage to his beloved wife, the Late Mildred Spence. Together they built a foundation rooted in love and faith, which continues to shine through their children: Larry L. Spence Jr. of Reidsville, Millicent (Anson) Anderson of Reidsville, Freda (Marty) Schrier of Florida, Mary Ann Oliver of Collins, and Tabitha Faye (Lonnie) Register of Hull, GA. nine cherished grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his siblings, Roger D. Spence, Linda Fay McBride, and Steve Spence.
The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00am on Thursday, August 24, 2023 with the funeral services to follow at 11:00am from the Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial with Rev. Greg Smith, Bishop Tim Lamb and Rev. Christopher Clark officiating. Interment will be in the Reidsville Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers will be Rev. Christopher Clark, Chace Clark, Brandon Spence-Schrier, TJ Schrier, Anson Anderson, Ruben Brueckner, Lonnie Register and Marty Schrier.
