Carl George Tiedemann

October 22, 1936 — July 29, 2014

Hilton Head Island

Carl George Tiedemann passed away peacefully in his home in Sea Pines on July 29, 2014. Carl was born October 22, 1936, to Hans and Marie Catharina Tiedemann. On April 29, 1967, Carl married Gisela Edith Scherwinsky. They have shared a wonderful love-filled life together. In addition to his loving wife, Carl is survived by his two daughters, Kirsten Marie Tiedemann of Todd, NC, and Kim Andrea True of Banner Elk, NC, his sister Anne Wilma Foltz of Seattle as well as his sister- and brother-in-law Karl Heinz and Helga Sophie Abel of Aerzen, Germany, extended family and many friends.

Carl loved the outdoors and enjoyed biking, kayaking, skiing, traveling the country as well as exploring foreign lands and, in his younger years, flying his single engine plane. He graduated from Lafayette College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Cornell University with a Master of Industrial and Labor Relations. As a Senior Executive with Exxon Chemical, he traveled the world. Everyone who worked for him, and colleagues who worked with him, loved and respected him. In one foreign office, he was known as the Awesome American. After leaving Exxon Chemical, he formed his own company, Compensation Strategies Consultants, of which he assumed the responsibility of President. After retiring to Hilton Head Island, Carl focused on his love of the outdoors and began kayak and nature guiding with Outside Hilton Head and also leading nature and history talks in the Forest Preserve in Sea Pines Plantation. Carl's warm demeanor, caring sensitive nature, joyous outgoing personality, and overall love of life brought joy to countless people. To know him was to love him.

A private family service celebrating Carls life will be held next week. Carls ashes will become part of Calibogue Sound, a very special place for Carl where he and his family have been enjoying sailing, swimming, drifting in the waves, windsurfing and kayaking, smiling, laughing, and living the good life together for so many years.

Memorial gifts may be sent to the wonderful people of Hospice of the Low Country at www.hospicecarelc.org or The Hilton Head Humane Association at www.hhhumane.org.

Carl will live in our hearts and spirits forever. His presence on this earth has truly left this world a better place and touched the lives of all of us lucky enough to have known him. After learning of his illness, Carls positive attitude shined on as he commented "I don't feel cheated, I've had a wonderful life."

Low Country Cremation Services and Burial is serving the Tiedemann family.
