Coach Daryl Lewis, age 74, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia surrounded by his loving family. Coach Lewis was born in Douglas on August 22, 1949, and had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a 1967 graduate of Lyons High School and had received a bachelor's degree from Georgia Teachers College (Georgia Southern University) and his master’s degree from Southern Miss University. Daryl started his 30 years in education at the Toombs County High School in 1971. In 1973 he joined the staff of the Reidville High School as a History Teacher until 1985 when he became the Assistant Principal under the direction of Dr. Gregg Maybin. In 1988, Coach Lewis became the Principal of Collins Elementary/Middle School until he retired in 2001. From 1973-1984, he was the assistant High School Football Coach; 1977-1978, he was the head Basketball Coach and in 1976 he was the High School Baseball Coach. After Coach Lewis retired in 2001, he went ½ time to Glennville Elementary School as a PE Coach. In 2005, Daryl became the Superintendent of the Department of Juvenile Justice in Eastman until his final retirement in 2008. He loved to travel out west and was an avid baseball fan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jeffrey Lee Lewis, Shirley Faye Hall, Carl Goings, and a brother, Ricky Jerome Lewis.
He is survived by his daughter, Diana Wiginton of Reidsville; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Keith and Linda Lewis of Buford, GA; half-sister, Jane Lewis; grandchildren, Jeffrey Nicholas Wiginton (Katherine Leach) and Frederick Nolan Wiginton all of Statesboro and an aunt, Betty Currin of NC; nieces, Amy (Mike) Sloan of Hawkinsville and Jennifer (Bernardo) Reyes of Flowery Branch.
The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 13, 2024, from the Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial with the funeral services to follow at 3:00pm with Mr. Chris Freeman, Mr. Billy Collins and Mr. Jordan Huerta officiating. He will be laid to rest by his mother Shirley Faye Hall “Boots” in a private committal service.
Pallbearers will be Mr. O'Dyer Spurgeon, Mr. Larry Powell, Dr. Gregg Maybin, Mr. Will Maybin, Mr. Ronnie McCall, Mr. Bill Harris, Mr. Robert Cross, Dr. Jesse Bradley, and Dr. James Brown.Memorials may be given to St. Joseph’s Indian School, for the Lakota Children; give.stjo.org
