Elva Lee (Cowart) Alston

Elva Lee Alston, (Lee) 84 died at home Wednesday, October 8 th after a brave battle with lung cancer. Lee was a native of Tattnall County, the daughter of the late Ernest and Jennie Cowart of Reidsville. In addition to her parents, Lee was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, Joe Alston; son, James Alston; a grandson, Jamie Alston; and siblings Ted Cowart, Ernestine Oliver, Louise Thurman, Herbert Cowart,  and Roy Harris Cowart .

Lee is survived by one daughter, Janet Youwer (Leonard) of Fond du Lac, WI., one son, Kenneth Alston (Anita) of Beaumont, CA; fourteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Her surviving siblings include two brothers, Ander Enoch Cowart (Polly) of Reidsville, GA., and E.B. Cowart of Glennville, GA.

Included in the survivors mourning Lee’s loss are two brothers in law, one sister in law, special family friend, Linda Sanchez, and several nieces and nephews.

Lee served as a military wife for twenty-seven years followed by twenty five years working closely with her husband Joe in his tax business. Lee enjoyed traveling the world with Joe, friends and family. She chose Statesboro as her primary residence in 2008, and enjoyed living near siblings and extended family. Lee loved the beautiful crepe myrtles and moss hanging trees of Georgia.

In honor of Joe’s military career, and Lee’s contribution to that service, a service will be held at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA on Monday, October 27 th , 2014 at 1:00 PM.

Lee’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice Advantage of Savannah and the wonderful caregivers from Home Instead in Statesboro.
