Dr. Emil J. Karp, a well known, loved and respected clinical psychologist who specialized throughout his long career in working with children, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. Dr. Karp was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 29, 1939. He completed his undergraduate work at John Hopkins University and went on to be awarded his PhD from Emory University. He began his practice in Atlanta in 1970, later relocated to Memphis, Tennessee; then in 1995, he moved to Savannah, a city he had always loved and frequently visited. He continued to specialize in the care and treatment of children. His vocation consumed him to his hearts delight; his ballades or melodic, colorful strains of Rachmaninoff frequently emanated in obtrusively from his home. He will be greatly missed by his peers, patients and friends.
He is survived by several cousins.
Dr. Karp will be, in private service buried alongside his father, Emil Karp, Sr., and his mother, Lorraine Karp, in Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio, Texas.
Remembrances can be made to the Humane Society of Greater Savannah or to Hospice Savannah.
