Ernest “Ernie” P. Johnson, age 70, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 30, 2022. He was born on June 20, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida to Thurman and Bettye Griffin Johnson. After graduating high school, Ernie would embark on an impressive 23-year career in the United States Army where he would attain the rank of CW3, retiring in 1992. Never one to sit idle, Ernie would go on to work at Tidelands Behavior Health in Savannah where he was the Facility and Vehicle Coordinator before becoming a Project Manager for the City of Savannah. In 2012 he would fully retire and he and his wife, Diane, would settle down in Reidsville. Ernie loved the outdoors and in his golden years he would find time to catch up on fishing, camping, boating, riding his motorcycle, and hiking; all of which during his working years were too often overlooked. Even after the sun went down, he would pursue things that brought joy to his life, and Ernie would work to master the guitar. He was an active servant of God, serving with the Gideons and both he and his wife were attending Reidsville Baptist Church. He also continued to support the men and women in uniform as a member of the local VFW Post 7764 in Reidsville. Additionally, he was a member of the Rising Sun Lodge #32 in Reidsville. Above all though, he relished each opportunity to spend with his family and friends. An American hero, an affectionate husband and father, and an overall amazing man; Ernie will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gary Johnson and Ronnie Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Diane Cobb Johnson of Reidsville; children, Jessica Johnson (Tracy Byrd) of Statesboro, Greg Johnson of Orlando, Camisha (Mitch) Owens of Savannah and James Hudock of Savannah; sisters, Pam Owens of Jacksonville, and Debbie (Lonnie) Sellers of Tennessee; grandson, Joshua Dzienny and great grandsons, Carson and Grayson; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends beginning at 6:00pm on Monday, April 4, 2022 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted 1:30pm on Tuesday April 5, 2022 from the Reidsville Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Jonas officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville with full military honors. Masonic Rites will be conducted by members of the Rising Sun Lodge #32.
