Eva Lou Groves Shuman, age 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the Journey House in Claxton. She was born in Hemp, GA on September 27, 1940, to Ernest and Minnie Lou Robinson Groves, but she lived most of her life in Reidsville, GA. She was sent to the Reidsville area as a missionary through the Methodist Church. When she met J. Daniel Shuman, they married; she made Reidsville her home. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Wesleyan, Eva Lou dedicated 34 years to the Tattnall County Department of Family and Children Services, where she passionately advocated for the welfare of children and families. Her professional journey was marked by compassion and commitment, reflecting her deep-rooted belief in the importance of nurturing and uplifting her community.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a longtime member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church (Grace Pointe), Eva Lou served in many capacities: as a Sunday School teacher, President of the Methodist Women, and as a member of the Administrative Board. Her commitment to her church extended to her role as the Church Historian, where she collaborated with the late Brenda Smith to document the church’s history from 1858 to 2016. Eva Lou was also actively involved in the Tattnall County Health Board and had the honor of serving one term on the Reidsville City Council.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Eva Lou found joy in simple pleasures. She loved cooking, sewing, and nurturing her flower garden, where she spent countless hours tending to her yard. These hobbies brought her peace and delight, and she often shared her culinary creations and beautiful blooms with those she loved.
Eva Lou was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She leaves behind her daughter, Danette Shuman of Reidsville; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Clarice Shuman of Glennville; and her cherished grandchildren, Kathleen Shuman Turner (Jackson Turner), J Daniel Shuman, Natalie Gore, and Jack Shuman, and one great-grandchild, Danielle Sisson.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 23, 2024, beginning at 2:00 p.m. with the funeral services to follow at 3:00 p.m. from the Grace Pointe Church in Reidsville with Rev. Steve Posey officiating. Interment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Louie Smith, Stevie Smith, Roger Kennedy, Don Martin, Greg Parker, Don Sikes, and Buddy McCall.
Memorials may be given to Grace Pointe Church, P.O. Box 218, Reidsville, GA 30453.
