Mr. F.J. “Johnny” Shuman age 68, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014. The Reidsville native had lived in Jesup and Swainsboro before moving back to Reidsville in 2010. He was a Vietnam Veteran that served in the U.S. Navy. A graduate of Georgia Southern University, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and later went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from John Marshall Law School. However, his passion for law enforcement led him to serve 42 years in the field including ten years as the Chief of Police of the Reidsville Police Department and thirteen years as the Chief of Police of the Swainsboro Police Department. He was a member of Rising Sun Lodge #32 at Reidsville and Past Master of the Swainsboro Lodge #244. He was Past Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection of the Valley of Savannah, 32 degree Knight Commander Court of Honor, First Masonic Defense Council, District Deputy of the First District of the Grand Lodge of Georgia, York Rite Night Templar and a member of Alee Shrine Temple. He was also a member of the VFW #7764, The Gideons, Clearwater Hunting Club, Sons of the American Revolution and the Reidsville United Methodist Church. In his spare time he loved to hunt, fish, read, and sing. He is preceded in death by his father, Jenarel Shuman and sister, Angela Shuman Kappes.
He is survived by his mother, Virginia Eason Shuman Kicklighter of Reidsville; children, Brian Shuman of Boston, Meredith Yarbrough of Marietta, and JR Shuman of Boston; brother-in-law, John Kappes of Reidsville; grandchildren, Peyton and Parker Yarbrough, Patrick and Isaac Shuman; one nephew and four nieces.
Visitation will begin at 6:00pm Sunday, July 27, 2014 from the Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory of Reidsville. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00am Monday, July 28, 2014 from the Reidsville United Methodist Church with the Reverend Marc Foster, Mr. Ronnie McCall and Mr. Jackie Trim officiating.
Pallbearers will be Chief Diane Sapp, Wilder Kirkland, Ronnie McCall, Jackie Trim, Mike Deal and Mark Shuman.
Memorials may be given in memory of Chief Shuman to the Methodist’s Children’s Home Macon at 304 Pierce Avenue Macon, Georgia 31203 or the Masonic Children’s Home at 1417 Nottingham Drive Macon, Georgia 31211.
