Fleeta Louise Todd

Fleeta Louise (Fussell) Todd passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 5, 2025 at the age of 97, following a ten-year journey with dementia. Though the disease would eventually deprive her of her memories and silence her voice, Fleeta's kindness, dignity, and grace would remain steadfast throughout.

Visitation and funeral services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Anniston, AL on Monday, March 10, 2025, officiated by Rev. Lin Veasey. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm. with the funeral service at 2:00. A small graveside service will be held in Glennville, GA at the Glennville City Cemetery on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at 11:00 am.

Born on February 23, 1928 to Sarah Rebecca (Saturday) Fussell and Walter Jackson Fussell in Waycross, GA, Fleeta was the youngest of four children. Her siblings included two brothers, Robert Leon Fussell and Tollie Edgar Fussell; and one sister, Gloria Frances (Fussell) Finn. Fleeta spent her formative years in Waycross attending Wacona School. In December 1942, the family moved to Savannah where Fleeta finished out her high school education at Savannah High School, graduating in May 1945.

In 1947, while working the ribbon counter at S.H. Kress in downtown Savannah, Fleeta met her future husband, Henry Roscoe Todd. After a year long courtship, the two married on April 18, 1948 in Savannah, GA. Fleeta and Roscoe maintained a loving and supportive marriage for 53 years until his passing in June 2001. Together the couple raised four children, Dale (Elise) Todd of Montgomery, AL; Jerry (Angelia) Todd of Oxford, AL; Randy (Gillian) Todd of Panama City Beach, FL; and Kathy (Joel) Hall of Hoover, AL.

In May 1961, the Todd family moved from Savannah, GA to Anniston, AL. Fleeta was a devoted wife and a loving mother who stayed home to manage the household affairs and raise the children. The family soon joined Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Anniston. Fleeta and Roscoe later transferred their memberships to the newly established Covenant Presbyterian Church and became charter members. Throughout the years and as the church grew, Fleeta served the congregation in various capacities. She led the youth group, she taught Sunday School, and she was elected as the first president of the Women of the Church. She served on the Building Committee in the early 1970s, and in 1990 she was honored to be installed as an elder.

Fleeta was well known and beloved for her crafting skills. Many summers she was fittingly anointed the “craft lady” by the children at Vacation Bible School. Additionally, she made Chrismons for the church Christmas tree, she helped design and quilt two wall hangings for the church, and she created pulpit scarves, banners, and stoles which were used in the sanctuary.

Never one to sit idle, Fleeta always had at least one project in the works. Among her many talents and hobbies were sewing, quilting, cross stitching, crocheting, ceramics, oil painting, writing, storytelling, and genealogy. Among her most prolific and proudest accomplishments were having a short story published in the Reader's Digest, writing and publishing a comprehensive book on her family tree, and winning countless ribbons and prizes for her exquisite quilts.

Family was always the number one priority to Fleeta, and over the years she had the pleasure of watching it grow. She was blessed to become a grandmother to 13 wonderful grandchildren, Billy Todd of Fort Myers, FL; Michael (Sherry) Todd of Montevallo, AL;Angela (Gene) Tucker of Pike Road, AL; Chris (Amy) Todd of Pike Road, AL; Meagan Todd of Munford, AL; Jonathan (Heather) Todd of Oxford, AL; Joshua (Kelly) Todd of Chamblee, GA; Jillian (Brian) George of Sugar Hill, GA; Logan Hall of Hoover, AL; Joel T Hall of Birmingham, AL; Sydney (Michael Justin) Varquez of Hoover, AL; Gaye (Tim) Gwin of Wetumpka, AL; and Kristin (Robby) Griffin of Montgomery, AL.

In addition, Fleeta was the matriarch to 19 great grandchildren, Savannah Todd; Lexie Todd; Reese (Cailyn) Todd; Lucy Todd; Zachary Tucker; Katelyn Tucker; Jackson Dale Todd; Mac Todd; Colten Helsel; Jake Helsel; Kyleigh Todd; Jackson Todd; Emmalyn Todd; Everett Todd; Lyla Todd; Dylan Hammonds; Payton Gwin; Brooke (Stephen) Countryman; and Landon Bland, as well as 7 great, great grandchildren, Vera Todd; Beckham Todd; Jacob Timothy Gwin; Herschel Stinson; Maverick Hammonds; Hudson Holland; and Riley Elise Sanderson.

Fleeta is preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Todd; her siblings, Leon Fussell, Tollie Fussell, and Gloria (Fussell) Finn; and her parents, Walter and Sarah Fussell.
