George A. "Bear" Screws passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018. Bear was born on Nov. 20, 1948, to George and Maude Screws. Bear retired as a lieutenant from the Hinesville Fire Department. He was a deputy fire marshal and arson investigator. He was a veteran with eight years in the Army and a tour in Vietnam, and recipient of a Bronze Star, Master Parachutist Badge, Cambodian Jump Wings, and numerous other awards and commendations. Bear enjoyed woodworking, making Christmas decorations and riding his motorcycle. He looked forward to riding in the mountains every year. Bear was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders, the Southern Cruisers Riding Club, American Legion Riders Club, a life-member of the VFW Post 6602 and a member of the American Legion Post 0168. Bear was preceded in death by his father, George E Screws, and his wife, Doris B. Screws.
He is survived by his mother, Maude V. Screws, and brothers, Ricky (Tammy) Screws of Ludowici and Tommy Screws of Waynesville.
Bear would like to thank Brian Plough and John and Joann Seward for always checking on him, and seeing if he needed anything. "Don't mourn me when I'm gone, 'cause I'm riding bikes with God.” Angels have wings, I'll be on a Gold Wing.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Crossroads Holiness Church, 2470 E.G. Miles Parkway, Hinesville.
