Savannah
Gloria Adkins Sheffield Betz Jones, Died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on October 31, 2017. Gloria was born on November 11, 1926, to parents Joniel Frank and Frances Mannion Adkins, and was a lifelong resident of Savannah. After graduating from Commercial High School, Gloria worked for the Central of Georgia Railroad. She later worked in data processing for the City of Savannah, and retired from the Savannah Sugar Refinery. Volunteering was a passion for Gloria, first working with the USO during WWII. Following her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, a Pink Lady, and at numerous church and social functions. Gloria was a devoted woman of great faith and an active member of her church community throughout her life. A longtime member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish and St. Peter the Apostle Parish, she enjoyed attending Morning Mass for many years. Her Irish-Catholic heritage was something she celebrated. Gloria proudly served as both a founding member of the Daughters of Ireland and a charter member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. Gloria’s positive outlook and zest for life kept her social calendar full. She thoroughly enjoyed the Tuesday Night Supper Club, weekly card games, and Bingo on Friday nights at Tybee. She loved to travel, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Her favorite hobby, by far, was spending time with her family, and being Mema was her greatest joy. She was preceded in death by husbands, Arthur R. (Bubba) Sheffield Jr., Lloyd Betz and Benjamin Jones; son, Thomas Sheffield; brother, John Frank Adkins.
She is survived by children, Skip (Pamela Screptock) Sheffield, Beth Sheffield, Michael (Donna) Sheffield, Gloria (Bill) Davis, and Joe Pat Sheffield; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and extended family members in the Adkins, Puder, and Fogarty families.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff and residents of Habersham House, Dr. Masood Ahmed, Ben Brodhead, Father Patrick O’Brien, and Hospice Compassus, for their loving care and attention.
