Tattnall County,
Gwendolyn Kicklighter Kennedy, age 86, passed away Tuesday December 31, 2013 at Evans Memorial Hospital under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born at the family home in Glennville, Georgia on March 16, 1927.
While attending Glennville High School, Gwen was on the high school basketball team. She was an outstanding player and would later go on to coach girls basketball in Reidsville. After high school, Gwen attended Lincoln Memorial University and Georgia Southern College, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Her professional career spanned 36 years with the Tattnall County Board of Education as an elementary school teacher. She was a longtime member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church. In her free time she was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed following the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Clinton Kennedy and her parents, Lee Iverson and Ollie Bird Kicklighter; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Davis.
Mrs. Kennedy is survived by her siblings, Elbert B. (Duann) Kicklighter of Glennville, Melba K. ( Dr. Harry) Downs of Conyers, Margaret K. ( Dr. Tom) Fussell of Spartenburg, SC, Mae Jo K. ( Dr. Fred) Garrett of Dothan, AL, Maxine K. Davis of Athens, GA, and Lee "Sonny" (Marilyn) Kicklighter of Brunswick; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 2, 2014 beginning at 1:00pm from the Reidsville United Methodist Church with the funeral services to follow at 2:00pm with the Reverend Marc Foster officiating. Interment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jeffery Kicklighter, Dr. David Kicklighter, Alex Tootle, Roger Kennedy, Tommy Wilkes and Jason Parker.
