Glennville GA
Huey Johnson, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. The native of Wray moved to Glennville in 1976 to serve out the remainder of his career with the United States Army. The peace and tranquil nature of Glennville suited him, particularly after serving two heroic tours of duty in Vietnam. In 1984 he retired from the Army, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Never one to be idle, he embarked on a new career, that same year, as the owner and operator of Johnson’s Barbeque. There he met new friends and reconnected with others in the community. Later in his life, he and his wife, Diane could often be found traveling to various destinations in their camper, a pastime he was quite fond of. In continuing his outdoor lifestyle, he was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Closer to home and most dear to his heart was his church family at Glennville United Methodist Church, where he was a longtime faithful member. A true American hero and Patriot, Huey’s service to God, Country, and Family will never be forgotten. He is preceded in death by his parents, Buster and Vernell Cato Johnson; son, Huey Johnson Jr., siblings, Edward Johnson, Albert Johnson, Johnny Johnson, Dewey Johnson and Edna McGee.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Diane Johnson of Glennville; son and daughter in law, Buster and Tammy Johnson of Glennville; brothers and sister in law, Robert and Maxine Johnson of Nicholas and Riley Johnson of Douglas; grandsons, Josh and Mason Johnson both of Glennville; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00pm on Friday June 19, 2020 with the funeral services to follow at 3:00pm from the Chapel of Glennville Funeral Home with the Reverends Jim Morrow and Roger Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Glennville City Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers will be Roy Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Donald McGowan, Nathan Cato, Johnny Johnson, and Jared Vickers.
