Jack Fisher

On February 27, 2018, Jack Albert Fisher, age 92, of Pooler, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord. Jack was born on July 10, 1925 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania to Winnifred and Thomas Alfred Fisher. The family moved to Greenville, Pa, where, with his brother Robert, he attended a one-room country school house. In high school, he represented his class as student council president and participated in the Hi-Y, a young men’s Christian association. Upon graduation in 1943, he joined the Navy’s V-12 program and was assigned to Princeton University, studying engineering. After midshipman’s school and a commission as an ensign, he was deployed to Pearl Harbor where he served on the U.S.S. Henderson, a destroyer, until the war ended.Back in Greenville, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, hitchhiking the eighty miles to class. In 1949, he graduated with a degree in civil engineering; met Doris, the love of his life; got married; and started work for the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company. For the next thirty six years, Jack worked for CBI, an international company with worldwide manufacturing facilities. CBI transferred him from Greenville to Chicago and back to Greenville where he became the plant manager. CBI then sent him to Germany to head its German subsidiary. After working in the Chicago corporate headquarters, he finished his career at CBI’s London, England office. In 1986, Jack retired to the Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia. For the next twenty five years, he performed volunteer work for his community and church: six years on the Landings Public Works Commission, four as its chairman; six years with Habitat for Humanity, two as its construction supervisor; four years as chairman of his church’s property commission; and thirteen years as a founder and the construction supervisor of the Bethesda Barn Builders. The Barn Builders has built barns, benches, bridges, and countless projects for the Bethesda Boys Home, for churches, and for the Landings. Jack was an avid woodworker, building furniture, cabinets, and shelving for his church, family, and friends. Among other honors he received for his volunteer work, in 2003 the Landings named him “Outstanding Citizen of the Year”. Jack was preceded in death by his father, Alfred; his mother, Winnifred; and his brother, Robert.

Jack is survived by his wife, Doris, of Pooler, GA; sons, Mark, of Rochester, MN.  (Barbara), David, of Pooler, GA; grandsons, Jonathan of Rochester, MN (Anjanette), Jeremy of Golden Valley, MN (Megan); great-grandchildren, Kieran, Dash, Harley, Roman, Jack, and Zane.

A memorial service will be held on April 6, 2018 at 11:00am, at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, Savannah, Georgia, where he was a member.
