James Robert Barnes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on April 19, 2023, at the age of 83. Born on December 23, 1939, in Brunswick, GA to Alline and Clifford Barnes, James was the proud brother of C.L., Vera, Bernice, Madeline, and Janice. James found love and companionship with Barbara Knight, whom he married on April 1, 1961. Together, they built a beautiful life and had two sons, Chris and Tony.
Throughout his life, James was a hardworking and dedicated employee of Southern Company for 37 years, where he was fondly known as “Brillo” to his co-workers. He retired as the head of operations in the control room of the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Facility. Despite his demanding job, James remained actively involved in serving his community through charity work and gospel outreach as a Gideon.
James had a deep passion for sports and agriculture, and he spent his leisure time cheering on his favorite teams, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves, and raising cows. He also cherished his role in helping his nephew Matthew grow into a fine young man. His absence will leave a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him.
James will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Barnes; son Chris (Tinker) Barnes; grandchildren, Randall (Danielle) Barnes and Christi (David) Gilman; great-niece Sandi Copeland, whom he loved like a daughter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Cedar Crossing Baptist Church, with Revs. Reece Mincey and Gary Roberson officiating. Services will conclude at the church.
Low Country Cremation & Burial is honored to serve the Barnes family during this difficult time.
