James Lester Fort, age 73, passed away on Sunday April 5, 2020 at Pine Pointe Hospice in Macon after an extended illness. The Tift County Georgia native moved with his family to Ocala Florida at an early age. While in sunny Florida, James’ love of the outdoors flourished. For the remainder of his life, he would love fishing and just being outdoors. After completing high school, he joined the U.S. Navy just as Vietnam was intensifying. Following his service to his country, he began his career as an upholsterer. Most of his life he plied his trade being in the business for himself. Throughout his life he had a passion for reading and would read everything he could get his hands on. In 1996 he moved to Elbert County and made Dewy Rose GA his homeplace. James is preceded in death by his wife, Carole Fort; parents, Turner and Mary Louvenia Fort and two brothers, George and Kenneth Fort.
Left to celebrate a life well lived includes his daughter, Tanya (Jason) Batten of Ocala FL; brother, Glen (Joyce) Fort of Gainesville FL; Sisters, Irene (Earnest) Dees of Branford FL, Shirley Stevens of Lakeland GA, and Mary Nelson of Crawfordville FL; an aunt, Annie Mae (W.A.) Weaver of Seville GA; five grandchildren; one great-grand daughter; 13 nieces and nephews; 21 great nieces and nephews; 10 great-great nieces and nephews; numerous cousins and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held later in the year for the family to celebrate James’ life.
