Reidsville GA,
James D. “Big Jim” Scott, age 70 passed away on Monday December 18, 2017 at Candler Hospital in Savannah after an extended fight with vascular issues and diabetes. The Emanuel County native moved to Reidsville in 1959. It was in 1959 that he and his father opened Scott’s Service Station. The station was in continuous operation for nearly 40 years until changing times and other opportunities led James away from the business. In 1998 the county built a central bus shop. It was there that he was the lead mechanic and was charged with keeping all the buses trouble free. In addition to running the bus shop, he was a school bus route driver for over 29 years. The number of kids that he shepherded back and forth to school are to numerous to count. In his free time, James could often be found cutting down a tree. Josh recalls that his father would always encourage him to scurry up the tree to limb them and it was always in an unsafe manner; never using safety harnesses! Being one to keep up with everything happening in and around town, you could often find him at Burn’s Auto Parts. It was there that he stayed “in the know” as to what all was happening and was going to happen in Reidsville. In 2017, seeing a need for leadership in the town he loved; he qualified to run for Reidsville City Council. It was just after qualifying that his health rapidly declined and he was unable to effectively campaign for the office. Above all else though, he found his greatest joy in his grandkids. He would often joke if there was a way to skip the kids and go straight to the grandkids; he would have done so. James Scott was a fixture of Reidsville and will be deeply missed by all that have known him.
Left to cherish their time together is his wife of nearly 46 years, Delores Scott of Reidsville; son, Josh (Brandy) Scott of Reidsville; 2 sisters, Paulette Scott and Deborah Scott both of Reidsville; 5 grandchildren, Noel Bowling-Scott and Seth Collins-Scott both of Port Charlotte FL, Mason Scott, Malachi “Monkey” Scott, and Elijah “Peanut” Scott all of Reidsville; numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends made along the journey.
Visitation will be held on Thursday December 21, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Friday December 22, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Reidsville Baptist Church with the Revs. Ray Sullivan, Chuck Jonas, and Tim Lamb officiating. Interment will follow in Reidsville City Cemetery.
