James “Chicken” Edward Batten, age 63 passed away Sunday, January 31, 2021. On this day, God reached out His hand and called him home. He was born in Claxton, Georgia on January 5, 1958 to the late Eddie and Rosa Lee Batten. He graduated from Glennville High School in 1975. He had worked for 10 years for Randy Burkhalter in his chicken houses. Chicken became an icon at the Huddle House working for 20 years and making many friends. Mr. James was known for his beautiful smile, always willing to help others and being a hard worker. Everyone he came in contact with absolutely loved him. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Merkie Jane Williams, Cleo Phillips, Lady Bird Phillips, Rosa Mae Cummings, Mary Jane Phillips, Lillie Govan, Lawanda Phillips and Joseph Batten; aunt Mellie Ruth Brown.
He is survived by his siblings, Linda Gale Phillips of Baxley, Claude Phillips of Starke, Florida, Elvis Batten of Glennville and John Batten of McRae; aunt, Betty (James) Davis of Statesboro; uncle, Daniel Brown of Glennville; also survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Family will receive friends from 10:00am to 12:45pm on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Funeral services will follow at 1:00pm from the Chapel of Glennville Funeral Home with the Reverend Reginald Anderson and Minister Edna P. Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Brick Branch Cemetery.
Due to Covid-19, social distancing of six feet will be enforced and the family is requesting that masks be worn at all times.
