James (Jim) Yardley Schaaf, Sr.
SAVANNAH – James Yardley Schaaf, 80, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. Yardley was born in Savannah on January 31, 1934 to Walter Sylvester and May Driscoll Schaaf, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Jimmy Schaaf.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Sapp Schaaf: his children, Margie (Tom) Carfrey of Savannah, Audrey (Loren) Lewis of Claxton, Barry Schaaf of Savannah, Janet Schaaf of Tybee Island, a step-son, Bobby Hattrich of Lake Marion, S.C. and the mother of his children, Barbara Daughtry Schaaf of Tybee Island.
His 12 grandchildren are Barrett Schaaf, Amber Peacock, Natalie Missroon, Ashley Harden, Morgan Lewis-Ortiz, Loren Lewis, Jr., Dustin Schaaf, Alyssa Beckdol, Allison Schaaf, Harley Schaaf, Kiley Schaaf and Katelyn Schaaf.
Granddaddy Yardley also has 12 great-grandchildren. His dear older brothers are John D. “Jack” (Nancy) Schaaf of Beaufort, S.C. and Walter S. “Cork” (Joan) Schaaf, Jr. of Whitemarsh Island. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and his beloved canine son “Zip.”
Yardley was born in Savannah, Georgia and raised near Troup Square in downtown Savannah. His family summered at Whitemarsh Island and eventually moved there permanently. He attended Cathedral Day School and Benedictine Military School.
He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired electrician with 42 years at Stone Container Corp. formerly Continental Can Company in Port Wentworth, Georgia. He was a lifetime member of the local IBEW #1391. After retirement he enjoyed tinkering on his tree farm in Bulloch County, Georgia.
A memorial funeral Mass will be held at 3pm Monday, February 2, 2015 at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church on Victory Drive, Thunderbolt, GA. The family will receive visitors 1 hour prior to the memorial Mass.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Ogeechee Area Hospice, 200 Donehoo St., Statesboro, GA. 30458. A private burial of the ashes to be held at a later date.
