Jerry Powell Smith , age 63, of Temple, Georgia passed away at home on Wednesday May 22, 2013 from gastrointestinal cancer under the care of Gentiva Hospice Care. Powell was born September 18, 1949 in Washington, DC to Joseph William Smith and Jean Holland Smith, who predeceased him. After graduating from Reidsville High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and pulled two tours of duty in Vietnam achieving the rank of Sergeant. Upon discharge, he graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He traveled throughout the United States and the world under contract with leading aeronautical companies such as Lockheed, McDonald Douglas, Boeing, Bell Helicopter International, ARINC, etc., working in the fields of aircraft maintenance and quality control. Later in life he worked for several leading trucking companies as a long haul driver.
Powell enjoyed following the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons as well as hunting, fishing and gardening. Everyone who knew him will recall his mischievous sense of humor. Powell will be remembered as a man who loved deeply, worked hard and cared for all.
He is survived by his wife, Jean E. Smith, of Temple, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, Ryan and Jen Smith, of St. Augustine, FL; a sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Steve L. Wilson, of Douglasville, GA; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph W. (Billy) and Bobbi Smith, of Salida, CO; cousins Barbara L. Thames of Reidsville, GA and Linda L. Termotto of Buford, SC; two granddaughters, a niece, three nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at the Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home in Reidsville on Friday May 24, 2013 from 6 PM to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held at Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home on Saturday May 25, 2013 at 10:00 AM with Reverend Marc Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Old Anderson Primitive Baptist Church, Manassas, GA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Old Anderson Church, Post Office Box 494 Claxton,GA 30417
