Collins GA,
Jerry “Petey” Powell, Jr., age 51, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. The Baltimore MD native moved with his parents to Tattnall County in 1995. Although Petey was challenged by various medical conditions throughout his life; he was the most positive and upbeat person you could ever meet. His zeal for life was fueled by rock and roll music and championship wrestling. There were very few rock concerts that came to this area that Petey didn’t attend. One of his most prized possessions was a towel that Gene Simmons, lead singer of Kiss, gave to him during a concert after wiping away sweat. He also loved watching wrestling on television. His favorite wrestler of all time was The Undertaker. With a large collection of wrestling belts, Petey could dress like, and imitate many of the wrestlers. Many people say they “never meet a stranger”, but with Petey that was true. No matter where he went, he always met new friends. Of all the experiences and places, he’s gone, perhaps his favorite place to go was church. He was a member of Hope Baptist Church where he served faithfully. The world will be a little less friendly without him in it. He is preceded in death by his mother, Twindle Powell.
Left to cherish fond memories are his father, Jerry Powel of Collins; sister, Kim (Mike) McCarty of Collins; nephews, Michael McCarty of Boston MA and Matthew McCarty of Boise ID; niece, Lindsay McCarty of Atlanta; a number of cousins and friends also survive.
