Reidsville,
Mr. Joel E. Smith age 93, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Community Hospice Inpatient Center in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native had lived in Florida for twenty five years before moving to Reidsville in 1974. He was a Reidsville High School graduate and attended Emory University. He was a World War II US Navy Veteran. Mr. Joel was the owner of Smith Brothers Lumber and loved to fish, hunt, and inventing “things”. He is preceded in death by his wives, Jane Readdy Smith and Eva Maude Kennedy Purcell Smith; brother, A.C. Smith, Jr; sister, Billie Smith Shuman.
He is survived by his son, D.J. Smith of Reidsville; daughter, Barbara Smith Steele of Kentucky; grandchildren, April Dutille of KY, Melissa Kell of Vidalia, and Matthew McDade of Macon; six great grandchildren; step children, Harry Hill of NY, Tommy Hill of Vietnam, and Rebecca McDade of Reidsville; nephews, Daniel Shuman and Jimmy Shuman.
Visitation will be conducted from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from the Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory in Reidsville. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00pm on Sunday, July 27, 2014 from the Reidsville United Methodist Church with the Reverend Marc Foster officiating. Interment will follow in the Brewton Cemetery in Hagan. Mr. Smith will lie in state at the Church beginning at 1:00pm.
