John H. Ashley, Jr. went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 17, 2017. He was born on August 28, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama. As a teenager he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 16 and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He served his country in the US Navy during the end of WW2 and after college he served 20 years in the Army Reserve retiring as a Major. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee Knoxville and Southwestern Theological Seminary. He served as minister of education in Southern Baptist churches and the Georgia Baptist Convention. He was a member of White Bluff United Methodist Church and former member of Bull Street Baptist Church. He is predeceased by his wife of 64 years Sue Johnson Ashley.
He is survived by his four children, John H Ashley III,(Vickie) of Savannah, Rebecca A Miller, (David) of Savannah, Robert S Ashley,(Cecilia) of Tennille, GA, Margaret A Neal, (Todd) of Snellville, GA; He leaves behind his five loving grandchildren, John H Ashley, IV, Lauren A Plumley, (Thomas), Stephen E Ashley,(Rebecca) of Savannah, Meagan A Haas, (Zach) of West Hartford, CT, and Amanda M. Blower(John) of Charleston, SC; He also leaves behind her five sweet great grandchildren, Grayson Plumley, Grant Plumley, Tucker Haas, Carolina Haas and Ethan Ashley.
Memorial Services will be held at White Bluff United Methodist Church on, Wednesday February 22, 2017 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends at 10:15am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Savannah Baptist Seaman’s ministry, 704 Wheaton St. Savannah, GA 31401.
Low Country Crematin and Burial is serving the Ashley family.
