John E. Barnett, Jr. age 82 passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems. Son of John Edwin Barnett, Sr. and Mettie Lou Miller Barnett. He was a native of Stone Mountain, living most of his life in Atlanta and moving to Brunswick in 1999. John was a US Air Force veteran, a 1957 graduate of Emory University Medical School and completed his residency in psychiatry at Temple University. He was a 29 year member of the Atlanta Psychiatric Clinic, Regional Chief Medical Consultant for Social Security from 1983 to 1997 and a Psychiatrist Consultant for the Georgia Department of Corrections. In 2006, he retired to Blythe Island and took great pleasure in the beauty of the marshes. John was an avid reader, writer, golfer and delighted in flying small aircraft. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family and friends and relished the Monday morning breakfast club at Maggie Mae’s. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Donnye Barnett; children, JoEllen Barnett, Clay Barnett, Murphy Barnett and his husband, Chuck Vickery; grandchildren, Orion Smith, Shiloh Smith, Anna Marie Smith and Jordan Barnett; 3 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to John’s favorite charities, Wounded Warrior Project or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Low Country Cremation Services and Burial is serving the Barnett family.
