John Dallas "Sonny" Haggard, Jr.,passed away on August 6, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 31, 1955, and throughout his life, he touched the lives of countless people with his warm-hearted nature and uplifting spirit. John will be remembered for his various roles in life - a dedicated correctional officer, an enthusiastic lawn business owner, a talented individual who taught himself Spanish, an artist who loved to draw and write poetry, and an avid contributor to the Tattnall Journal.
John's career as a Correctional Officer with the Georgia Department of Corrections showcased his commitment to serving others. Known for his unwavering dedication and compassion towards those under his care, he made a positive difference in the lives of many individuals. Additionally, John found joy in operating his lawn business. Riding in his truck, which he affectionately named "Mater," brought him great pleasure as he tended to gardens and maintained landscapes for numerous clients.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John had an artistic soul. His love for drawing and writing poetry allowed him to express himself profoundly. The Tattnall Journal became a platform where he contributed articles that showcased not only his talent but also his passion for sharing stories and insights with others.
One could never forget John's lively personality. He had an incredible sense of humor and was always telling jokes that could light up any room. His laughter was infectious, bringing smiles to the faces of those around him. Whether it was through a witty remark or a playful anecdote, he had the remarkable ability to brighten even the darkest days.
John's military service further exemplified his dedication to duty and love for his country. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army and also devoted time to the Georgia National Guard. His service is a testament to his loyalty and willingness to protect and serve others.
Throughout his life, John held many roles within his community. He was a proud member and choir director of Connors Baptist Church, where he fostered a sense of unity through music. Additionally, he led the men's fellowship, providing guidance, support, and friendship to those who sought it. John's contributions to his church were immeasurable, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those who worshiped alongside him.
John was born to John Dallas Haggard Sr. and Mary Lizzie White Haggard, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Haggard of Reidsville; daughter, Carrie Leigh Wolf of Reidsville; stepdaughters Cotrina Buckley and Ashley Merritt, both residing in Jesup; sisters Betty Grace Martin of Claxton and Mary Edwards of Reidsville; grandchildren John Paul Haggard, Jolin Carmichael, and Olivia Carmichael; step-grandchildren Dezmon Merritt, Keegan Merritt, Aleah Merritt, Tate Buckley, JC Lynn, Quince Hipschen, and Ethan Hipschen; as well as several nieces and nephews.
To honor the memory of John Dallas "Sonny" Haggard Jr., a Memorial Service will be held on August 10th at Low Country Cremation & Burial in Reidsville. The service will commence at 6:00 PM as friends and family gather to share their cherished memories together. Prior to the Memorial Service, there will be a Visitation from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
