John Robert Sanders, Sr., 78, passed away on November 11, 2022 at his home in Reidsville, GA. He was born in Lyons, GA on September 11, 1944 to the late John Watson and Catherine Tod Sanders.
He graduated from Toombs Central High School and the Warnell School of Forestry at the University of Georgia. His first job after college was with Georgia Pacific Corporation, where he remained employed until his retirement in 2006.
John’s love of the outdoors began at an early age, when he spent much of his childhood exploring the woods. As an adult, he was happiest outside, either riding on his tractor, hunting, fishing, or finding peaceful spots along the banks of the Altamaha River.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristin Kelly Detwiler (Jeremy) of Savannah; his son, John Robert Sanders, Jr. of Denver, CO; his sister, Beverly Gibbs of Reidsville; his granddaughter, Neely Detwiler of Savannah, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Charlotte English of Vidalia.
The family would like to acknowledge the great care, love, and compassion of his caregivers who became family to us: Mary Nunnally, Lenora Mincey, Ramonia Dugger, Cathleen Sharpe, Wanda Sharpe, Priscilla Brown, Sandra Smith and the late Jennifer Johnson.
The family also would like to thank Ogeechee Area Hospice for their love and care, especially his nurses Ann Deloach, Kellie Murray, and Sibyl Kirkland.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 982 Providence Church Road in Lyons. The funeral and burial will immediately follow at the church at 11 a.m. Services will be led by John’s friend, Minister Ray Joyce. Pallbearers will include Gary Breland, Joe Cheney, Marcus Deloach, Herman Joyce, Russell Pearson, Robert Sharpe, Steven Smith, and Thomas Thompson.
Low Country Cremation and Burial is serving the Sanders family.
