Reidsville,
Johnathan Allen Rush, Jr.
“Little Goober”
March 19, 2004 – October 1, 2016
On Saturday, October 1, 2016, Johnathan suffered his last seizure and will never have to suffer again. You may have seen him around town. You know the cute little guy with the gorgeous smile and eyelashes for miles? Him. He spent nine years of his life learning about love from the staff at Reidsville Elementary School. The past two months he advanced his education at Reidsville Middle School. He was welcomed with open arms at both schools and was loved despite his difficulties. He spread love wherever he went.
Johnathan never retained a word beyond “mama” and “hey dada”. Although he couldn’t speak, if you listened close with your heart you could understand what he wanted or needed. He was an attention seeker. Freely displaying his pitiful lip for all to see and expertly demonstrating the puppy dog eyes. If you called him a faker, he’d grin his goofy little grin.
The last three years of his life were difficult and full of setbacks and hospitalizations. Although food was his second love (surpassed by his love for mama), he lost the ability to eat in 2014. Johnathan was a preemie who by all rights shouldn’t have survived, but we got to keep him for twelve and a half years. He fought epilepsy the majority of his life. He began with Infantile Spasms at the age of roughly six months old. This developed into unspecified childhood epilepsy that we battled, sometimes not so bravely, for his entire life. In 2014 he was finally given a specific diagnosis of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy that is both medication and treatment resistant. It stood true to its word.
Fortunately, earlier this year the Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome Foundation chose him as the recipient of their yearly wish trip to Give Kids the World Village in Orlando where he spent six days and five nights in a villa in a closed community where everything was accessible to him. He got to ride a carousel that accommodated his wheelchair. He got to fly with the butterflies. He even got to ride a train. He got the chance to visit Epcot, Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, LegoLand, and SeaWorld. He was tired easily, but he enjoyed his time there. He had a star placed at Give Kids the World Village in the Castle of Miracles Star Tower. He even got to celebrate Halloween and Christmas while there.
Sadly, he leaves behind a heartbroken community and family. He leaves behind at home his parents, John and Jerri Rush, along with his brother and sister, Tobias “Toby” and Evangeline “Eva” Rush of Reidsville. Also mourning: his Aunt AnJeanette “AJ” Crenshaw of Metter and Aunt Kendra Rush of Claxton. Uncle James Crenshaw of Statesboro and Uncle Chris “Sport” Rush of Collins. Grandmother Marie (Paul) Tuttle of Orange Park, FL. Cousins Shonda Murphy of Statesboro, Shanna Murphy of Claxton, Dalton Rush of Glennville, Connor Conley of Register, Bethany Rush of Collins, and Macy Rush of Claxton. All the staff at Reidsville Elementary and Reidsville Middle Schools. All his classmates past and present. All the supporters and participants of the Tattnall County Special Olympics. The Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome Community. Oh so many others that cannot possibly be mentioned here.
He would be mourned by others had they not passed before him. This includes his paternal great grandmother “Mema” Margaret Busby; paternal grandfather Mike Rush; His maternal grandfather Jerry Crenshaw and grandmother “granny” Joyce Crenshaw; and his Aunt LaNell Crenshaw.
His memorial service will be held at 6pm, Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory in Reidsville with Floyd Mercer, Jr., officiating. The family asks that no one wears black, only bright happy colors. If you have purple or green, please wear it as it signifies Epilepsy Awareness and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome Awareness.
We thank you for loving our baby.
