Reidsville GA
John Daniel Shuman, 82, passed away January 2, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family under the care of Southern Regency Hospice. Daniel will be deeply missed because he was a dedicated family man, a devoted servant to his fellow man, and a devout follower of Jesus.
The lifelong native of Tattnall County was driven to succeed in all that he attempted. After graduating from high school, Daniel served in the U.S. Army. He then attained a Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University and a Master’s degree from the University of Georgia. His degrees in the field of education enabled him to serve young people for 34 years through the Department of Juvenile Justice, where he retired as District Director. Governor Sonny Purdue appointed him as Chairman of the State Board of Juvenile Justice.
Daniel Shuman’s life consisted of serving the public in other areas as well. He served a term as a City Councilman for the City of Reidsville and an additional 16 years as a County Commissioner for Tattnall County. He also served on Canoochee EMC’s board of directors for 16 years. Even in the midst of his professional accomplishments, one of his favorite “jobs” was working on his farm. Daniel found great peace as a pecan and pine tree producer. Never one to sit still, Daniel still found ways to unwind. Among his favored escapes were hunting and fishing. No matter how busy he was, Daniel always made time to support his favorite team, the Georgia Bulldogs.
His devotion to his career and family paled in comparison to his love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Daniel spent countless hours at his home church, Reidsville United Methodist Church. When he was newly married, he was a counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship. He taught Sunday school for over 40 years, served as chairman of the Building Addition Committee, and rose to be a District trustee as he grew in God’s grace.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Henry and Sarah Elizabeth “Billie” Shuman.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Eva Lou Shuman of Reidsville; daughter, Danette Shuman of Reidsville; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Clarice Shuman of Glennville; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Frances Shuman of Atlanta; grandchildren, Kathleen Shuman, J Daniel Shuman, Natalie Gore, and Jack Shuman.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 beginning at 6:00pm at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at 11:00am from the Reidsville United Methodist Church with the Reverend Steve Posey officiating. Interment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
