Kathy (Brewton) Harris

Kathy Brewton Harris of Athens died Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta following an aneurysm on February 20, 2015.  She was born May 31, 1952 in Lyons, Georgia.

Nancy Katherine Brewton was the daughter of the late William Covin Brewton and Beth Aaron Brewton.  She spent her childhood in Reidsville and was graduated from high school at Breneau Academy in Gainesville.  Kathy was a scholar who became an expert on Middle Eastern Affairs.  She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville and her Master’s Degree and Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Georgia.  While working on her Doctorate, she did research for the University and helped research and write the Bicentennial History of the University of Georgia in the 1990’s.  She left an unpublished manuscript concerning Middle Eastern history and politics.

Kathy had been a resident of Athens for many years while teaching Political Science at Gainesville College on its Watkinsville Campus and after the College’s merger with North Georgia College and State University, at the Gainesville campus of the resulting University.  She had previously lived in Baxley, where she worked with the Housing Commission that served several counties.

She was a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church, an avid gardener and an online bookseller.

Kathy Harris is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Harris King and husband Brian King, of Utica, Ohio, and by her twin sister Karol Brewton of Reidsville.

The funeral service will be in the Chapel of the Bradley B Anderson Funeral Home in Reidsville, at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2015 followed by burial at the Brewton Cemetery in Hagan, with Rev. Steve Miller, Pastor of the Reidsville Baptist Church will be officiating.  The family will receive visitors immediately before the funeral service in the funeral home.
