Lamar Holmes McCall, Sr. died May 20, 2017, after a short illness. Lamar was born in the Hughland Community, outside of Reidsville, on March 5, 1924, to Bruce & Allie Mae Rogers McCall. Around the age of 5 they moved to Liberty County and later moved to Brunswick, Georgia. On July 4 th , 1940, he returned to Reidsville, to live with his brother Frank and begin work at McCall Service Station. In 1942, the War was on and he enlisted into the Mighty Eighth Air Force. He was stationed in Molesworth, England, in the 427 th Bombardment Squadron of the 303 rd Bombardment Group, as a waist gunner on the B17. On November 21, 1944, he was wounded by German anti-aircraft shrapnel, while on a bombing mission over Meresburg, Germany, and in February 1945, he was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart.
After returning from the war, Lamar resumed work at the bus station, where he would soon take on all of the bookkeeping duties for 3 service stations, a trucking business and the McCall Funeral Home. After the War, he met and married the love of his life, Mattie Mae Pritchett. They raised a family of 5 children and after 42 years of employment, Lamar retired from bookkeeping, to enjoy life at home. He and Mattie were together 69 years, before her death, 7/26/2015.
Lamar is survived by 4 of his 5 children; Lamar “Buddy” McCall, Jr. (Paula), Reidsville, Janice Dixon (Jack) Blackshear, Ga., Larry McCall (deceased), Marc McCall (Heidi) Reidsville, and Faith Freeman (Curt), Reidsville. Eight grandchildren, Ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Several nieces and nephews, including special nephews, Dean McCall (Boots) Bartlesville, OK, John Pritchett (Betsy), Goldsboro, NC, Jim Pritchett Winston Salem, NC and special niece Janet Glascoe (Larry), Winston Salem, NC.
The family will receive friends beginning at 6:00pm on Monday from the Reidsville Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial. Graveside Funeral services will be conducted 10:00am on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from the Reidsville City Cemetery with military honors rendered by the US Air Force.
Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
