Claxton,
Larry Alton Spence, age 68, peacefully left this earth Thursday evening, July 10, 2014 at his residence under the care of Living Care Hospice. A Chatham County native, Larry lived most of his life in Savannah moving to Claxton 12 years ago. He retired with more than 20 years with Belk as an Operational/Security Manager, and most recently worked as the manager of the Claxton-Evans Airport until his recent diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Larry had a passion for community service; he was an honorary Evans County Deputy Sheriff, a school crossing guard, a Commissioner of the Claxton Housing Authority, co-chair of the American Red Cross Claxton-Evans blood drive, a member in the Claxton-Evans Chamber of Commerce, Claxton Rotary Club and the Evans County Wildlife Club. During his years residing in Savannah he was a member of Freewill Baptist Church and Windsor Forrest Baptist Church. Since moving to Claxton, he has been an active member of Eastside Baptist Church. Larry was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and Uncle. He loved his grandchildren with all of his heart. He enjoyed playing golf and softball. Watching the UGA Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ancil A. Spence and Lillie Sikes Tucker Spence; a brother, Berman Tucker and a nephew, Terry Tucker.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Sarah Curry Spence of Claxton; daughter, Stephanie S. (Toby) Silva of Somerset MA; son, Brian J. (Kim) Spence of Savannah; brothers J.B. (Lucille) Tucker of Claxton, Bobby (Carolyn) Tucker of Savannah; sister, Bonnie T. Price of Savannah; grandchildren Ty, Taylor, Spence, Zachary, Coralia, Trinity, Presley, Chatham, Grayson, Scarlett, and Amelia; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Living Care Hospice for the support and care given to Larry.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 am Monday July 14, 2014 from Eastside Baptist Church in Claxton. Funeral Services will follow; beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Sikes Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Roberts, Lee Smith, Jerry Bruce Purcell, Neal Hammock, Ronald Bunton, Dean Cameron, and Keith Barnard
Honorary pallbearers will be No Mercy Sunday School Class, Luther Royal, Edward Oglesbee, Harold Rogers and Randall Tippins.
Memorials may be given to Eastside Baptist Church Building Fund, The Gideons, (Claxton Camp) or Sikes Chapel Cemetery Fund.
