Marc Walton Smith April 25, 1952 – September 15, 2015
Marc Walton Smith, age 63, of Savannah, Georgia, died peacefully at home September 15, 2015.
Mr. Smith was born in Savannah, Georgia, to Marion Floyd Smith and Evelyn Shipley Smith. He lived most of his life in Savannah. He graduated from Herschel V. Jenkins High School in 1970 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Armstrong State University at Savannah, Georgia, where he was on the Dean’s List. He received an additional Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from the University of Georgia at Athens, Georgia. Mr. Smith later went on to earn a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Psychology from Georgia Southern University at Statesboro, Georgia, where he was on the Dean’s List.
Mr. Smith served as a pharmacist at Memorial Medical Center and at Don Auld’s Pharmacy, both in Savannah, Georgia. He created a successful second career as a Licensed Professional Counselor and owner of Lifestyle Management Resources, offering Employee Assistant Program services for several large clients including major employers in both the public and private sectors. He also worked as a mental health counselor in the state prison system. He was a Certified Employee Assistance Professional and was certified in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing.
Marc was known for his generosity, his larger than life persona, and his often zany and outlandish sense of humor. Whether he was donning a gorilla mask or holding forth as his alter ego, “The Great Landau,” making hilarious pronouncements punctuated with his skyward-pointed scepter (a toilet plunger), Marc loved to make people laugh. And he did. He was a consummate athlete, performing in triathlons and leading his team to win costume awards several times in the Spanky’s April Fool’s Road Race as killer bees, a medical team, and a motorcycle gang.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his father and mother, and by his godchild and niece, Mary Theresa Finocchiaro. He is survived by three sons, Marc Walton Smith, Jr., of Atlanta, Georgia; Stephen Matthew Smith, of Savannah, Georgia; and Zachary Rabun Smith, of Savannah, Georgia; his brother, Marion Floyd Smith, Jr. and his wife, Deborah Ann Wolfe, and their children, Marion Floyd Smith III (Trey) and Arwen Elizabeth Smith; two sisters, Pamela Evelyn Smith and her husband, David R.
