Obituary
Mrs. Mattie Mae Phillips Couch, age 85 passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Riverview Nursing Home under the care of Hospice Savannah after a stroke 3 years ago. The Collins, GA. native lived in Savannah most of her life and later moved to Cumming, GA. for many years before moving back to Savannah 14 years ago. Mrs. Couch was led to the Lord while attending DeRenne Avenue Church of God in Savannah under the leadership of Pastor P.H. Hammond. She later joined Cumming Church of God and then Trinity Church of God and now a member of The Sanctuary in Savannah. She was a devoted mother, wife sister, grandmother, and Christian. She retired from Tetley Tea after working 17 years, and loved growing flowers and working in her garden. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Couch; her parents, Albert S. and Edna Kennedy Phillips; two brothers, Jasper L. Phillips and Henry H. Phillips, Sr. and two infant sisters, Betty Jean and Evelyn.
She is survived by one daughter, Jacklyn Miller (Ken) of Guyton; one son, Clinton L. Hodges (Marty) of Savannah; two grandsons, Clinton Alvah Watts (Debbie) of Pooler, and Rodney Flatman, Jr. of Savannah; one great-granddaughter, Christy Watts and one great-great granddaughter, Morgan all of Gainesville; one sister, Mary Lou Bowers (Samuel Dee) of Pooler; two brothers, Charles Phillips (Jerri) of Savannah and James Phillips (Betty) of Nashville, TN; five step-children, Geneva Keys (Dennis), Ginger Turner all of Dahlonega, Margie Banks, Katie Turner (Jerry), Emmett Couch (Lisa) all of Cumming; and 11 step-grandchildren; 25 step-great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-great grandchildren; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Visitation and Funeral Services
Visitation will be held from 6pm-8pm, Thursday, January 31, 2013 at The Sanctuary in Savannah on Whitfield Ave.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00pm Friday, February 1, 2013 at The Sanctuary in Savannah with the Reverends Hugo Hammond, Larry McDaniel and Todd McDaniel officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey West.
Preferred Memorials and Donations
Contributions may be made to Hospice Savannah.
