SSgt Otis Jackson, Jr. retired, 87, died Friday night, August 26, 2016, in Glenvue Health and Rehab in Glennville under the care of Spanish Oaks Hospice. Born on November 20, 1928 he was the second child born to Otis Jackson Sr. and Ruby Parnell Jackson. At an early age he decided farm life was not for him. In February 1946 he enlisted with the United States Army. He served as an infantryman in 11B4H light weapons and retired with 20 years of service in August 1966. He received the National Defense Service medal. After retirement he returned to live in Harlem and Hephzibah, near Augusta, Georgia. His joy after retirement was traveling. He was happy when his hands controlled the steering wheel of a vehicle. He always wore freshly ironed short sleeve shirts and creased pants with suspenders.

He and Dorothy “Dot” Wood Jackson had three children, Otis Wayne Jackson, John A. Jackson, and Janet A. Jackson Arnold. After Dot’s death he married Maude Francis “Fran’ Nobles. There were no children from this union. After her death he married Mattie Ester Lynn and they moved to Collins, Georgia. Otis was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and the Harlem Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie L Jackson; three children, Otis and (Lorna) Jackson, John Jackson, and Janet Arnold; sisters, Betty M. Jackson and Helen Ann Jackson; and brother, Marion Lonnie Jackson. He has ten grandchildren, Terri Jackson, Chris Long, Faith Jackson, Devin Long, Adam Long, and Connor Jackson, Dorothy Elizabeth “Beth” Jackson; and Daniel Arnold, Hazel Burke, and Sondra Maymard; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his parents; wives, Dot and Fran; half-sister, Ruth Gaynell Jackson, and brother, James Agee Jackson.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at 2:00 pm at the Glenvue Health and Rehab chapel with Reverends Artis Carswell and Phillip Bragg officiating.
