Paul Alan Carey, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at his residence from Lewy Body Dementia. He was surrounded by family members and had been under the care of Georgia Hospice Care for over two years. He was born on July 9, 1945, in Wellsburg, West Virginia, to Helen Wohnhas Carey and Paul Raymond Carey. He graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1963. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1984 as a Master Sergeant (E8). His military occupation specialty was in finance and personnel. In addition to several stateside assignments, Paul also served in Okinawa, Korea, Vietnam (two tours each), and Germany. He was awarded numerous awards and medals for his service. He then spent 20 years in civil service, retiring in 2005, at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. Paul was an avid bass fisherman. He loved the sport and was active in the Tattnall County Bass Club for many years. He helped with the kids’ fishing tournaments for several years, both at the Glennville Recreation Department and Dr. James Strickland’s pond. He was a member for over 20 years and a deacon at Gospel Baptist Church in Claxton, Georgia. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Curtis J. Baker; and a brother-in-law, John O. Truitt.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet Helen Hammers Carey; son, Paul Richard Carey (Betty) of Kentucky; daughters, Diane Brost (Billy) of Utah and Tomoko Mathis (James) of Texas; granddaughter, Christy Ray (Nick) of Claxton; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Carey of West Virginia; a sister-in-law, Nancy Truitt of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Glennville Funeral Home followed by funeral services at 12 noon. Burial will be in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia, with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in Paul’s name to Georgia Hospice Care, 141 S. Macon St., Jesup, Georgia 31545.
Thanks are extended to his caregiver who was with him during the duration of his illness, Edna Collins. Also, the family extends gratitude to the staff, nurses, and CNAs of Georgia Hospice Care.
