Peggy "Granny" Johnson

August 16, 1939 — April 11, 2024

Donald Community

Peggy Johnson “Granny" as she was affectionately known to many, age 84, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 11, 2024, at her residence surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Georgia Hospice Care.  She was reared in Miami and met the love of her life, Thurman Johnson, Sr in early 1950.  In 1971 they moved to the Donald Community where they bought a house that was built in 1905 and they completely remodeled, making it their dream home.  Mrs. Peggy was fragile with her money.  She made kites for her grandkids with brown paper bags and even cut patterns for clothes using the bags.  She worked as bakery and deli manager for Red and White Grocery Store for 15 years.  She especially enjoyed decorating cakes.  She also worked at the Glennville First Baptist Church for many years preparing the Wednesday night family meals. She was affectionately known for her delicious pecan pies, moist pound cakes, and fruit cakes.  Every Christmas, she cooked over 20 pecan pies for her family.  When asked for one of her recipes, she said she never measured, just tasted, and added until it was right!  Mrs. Peggy enjoyed sewing, quilting, and making pocket crosses.  Over her life, she passed out thousands of pocket crosses to people she knew and did not know.  Many of her crosses have traveled with passengers in trucks and cars up and down the highways.

Of all the things she did and accomplished, her most prized possession was her grandchildren. Each summer, she had “Granny Camp” at her house.  All of the grandkids would come and stay with her for a few weeks.  During that special time, she taught them life’s values, skills, and most importantly how to love.  They also enjoyed planting flowers and shrubs with her.  She had a green thumb and could make anything grow. She was a faithful member of Grace Missionary Baptist Church.  At church she showed her compassion and love, as well.  Each Sunday, she would have a goodie bag of candy for the kids.  They looked forward to seeing her each week.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Jolly Watson, Philip and Ruby Tripplett; her husband of 63 years, Thurman Lee Johnson; her daughter in law, Patty Johnson; son in law, Dennis Howard; and a great grandson, Cole DeLoach.

She is survived by her children, Donna Howard, Debbie (Charles) Reddish and Thurman "TJ" Johnson, Jr all of Ludowici; 9 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 10 great great grandchildren.  Her family was her priority.  She enjoyed taking trips with them, camping, fishing and attending ball games.  She disciplined, but she loved harder. She was the epitome of agape love towards her family and friends.

We know that Mrs. Peggy has now heard the words, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” Ecclesiastes 12:7 says, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Her body is healed, and she is whole again.   Up until her last breath, she said “I love you” to every family member that visited with her.  She was proclaiming her love for them one more time.

The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00pm on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be conducted 11:00am on Monday, April 15, 2024 from the Chapel of the Glennville Funeral Home with the Reverends Robert Long and Thomas Kelley officiating.  Interment will be in the Grace Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Whitley, Matt Blizzard, Tripp Smith, Jimmy Parker, Bobby Parker and Jake Howard.

Glennville Funeral Home has the honor to serve the Johnson family.
