Ray Harvey

September 21, 1933 — May 9, 2023

Reidsville

Ray Harvey passed away on May 9, 2023, at the age of 89. He was born on September 21, 1933, in Tattnall County, the son of Clinton and Lessie Harvey. Ray spent his formative years in Collins Schools, where he developed a strong educational foundation that would guide him throughout his life. He proudly graduated from Collins High School and went on to further his studies at Georgia Southwestern College.  Following college, Ray embarked on a distinguished career in Civil Service. He began his journey at Robins Air Force Base. Subsequently, he transferred to Augusta before transferring to his permanent station at Ft. Stewart, where he dedicated much of his career. As a communications engineer, Ray played a vital role in the repair and maintenance of radio equipment on various types of aircraft. His expertise and commitment ensured the successful functioning of the communication systems and contributed to the safety of those in the air and the security of the United States.

After retiring from his professional endeavors, Ray had the opportunity to pursue his passions fully. He was an avid outdoorsman who found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. Fishing and hunting held a special place in his heart, and he spent countless hours enjoying these activities. Alongside his beloved wife Barbara, Ray embarked on annual three-month adventures to Lake Oconee in their camper. Their days were filled with fishing trips on their pontoon, and even after dark, they could often be found night fishing from their vessel, creating cherished memories.  Closer to home, Ray found great fulfillment in cultivating his garden. He possessed a green thumb and had a remarkable ability to grow all manner of vegetables throughout the year. Whether it was the biggest onions of the summer or his famous Christmas cabbage in the winter, Ray's bountiful harvests were a testament to his dedication and skill. He took immense joy in sharing the fruits of his labor with family, friends, and neighbors, blessing them with the abundance of his garden.  Even at the time of his passing, Ray leaves behind a testament to his dedication to the land. He has potatoes left to be harvested, and a beautiful stand of corn that stands tall in the field, symbolizing the resilience and lasting impact of his legacy. Just as the crops continue to grow, so too does his memory; Ray will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.  Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton, and Lessie Harvey, as well as his brother, J.I. Harvey.

Left to cherish a lifetime of memories is his devoted wife of over 59 years, Barbara Harvey of Reidsville; step-son, Randy Bragdon of Lyons; daughter-in-law, Debbie Bragdon of Lyons; a brother, David Harvey of Reidsville; two grandchildren, Robby (Jessica) Bragdon of Ashville, NC, and Josh (Kharissa) Bragdon of Lyons; three great-grandchildren, Cooper, Sawyer, and Tristan; a special cousin, Vondell McNair of Collins; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a multitude of friends who were touched by his kind and generous spirit also survive.
