Obituary
Rev. Jim Sikes, Jr
. age 85 passed away Sunday,
December 12, 2010 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice
Inpatient Center in Statesboro. Native of Liberty County,
GA completed grammar school at Willie Elementary
School. Moved to Pembroke in 1940 and graduated from
Marlowe High School in Effingham County in 1944. He
entered in military service in April 1945. After finishing basic
training at Ft. Bragg he was sent directly to Japan. After serving
a short time in the 33
rd
Infantry Division in Hemeji, Japan he was
sent to the 46
th
Engineer BM where he became a qualified operator
with both Heavy trucks and engineer equipment. In 1947 he returned
to Pembroke where he became employed by the State Highway
Department as a heavy equipment operator. In 1949, he returned to the military
service. After finishing the signal school at Fort Gordon he returned to Ft. Benning.
At the outbreak of the Korean War, he was assigned to the 15
th
Infantry Regiment,

rd
Infantry Division and was sent to Japan. On 11 November 1950 he entered the
Korean War at Wonsan, North Korea. He traveled with his unit to Hungari where
they met with the Chinese invasion forces and was forced to return to Hungmam,
where he later earned the title “Hungnam Survivor”. After serving 14 months in
Korea, he returned to the States and was discharged. In 1955, he returned to the
military service. In 1960 he attended and graduated from the adjutant General
Personnel Management School in Ft. Benjamin at Harrison, Indiana. He served two
tours in Germany and two tours in Vietnam. His decorations include the Combat
Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific
Campaign Medal, Japanese Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Korean
Campaign Medal Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal. American
Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
In February 1969 he returned to Pembroke after learning that his father was terminally
ill. After the funeral, he returned to Ft. Stewart where he was assigned to Fish and Wild
Life as a heavy equipment operator. In July he was injured while performing military
Duty. He was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC for Spinal Surgery.
In July 1970 he was retired from the service with 100% disability, having served 20 years
and 10 months. After leaving the military service, he was converted and started serving in
the Christian service. Being Licensed by South Newington Baptist Church on Mothers Day
1975, he started his ministry at Nightingale Nursing Home. He was ordained as a deacon
at Faith Baptist Church in Pembroke on 5 November 1978. On 14 September 1980 he was
ordained to the ministry by Hagan Baptist Church in Hagan, GA. He was pastor of three
churches, associate Pastor of two Churches and was Pastor Emertus of Bethel Baptist
Church in Chatham County. In all, he delivered God’s word in 52 places consisting of
Churches, nursing homes, prisons and radio stations.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah A. Sikes of Collins. Sons, Cliff Sikes of Memphis, TN,
Kenny (Kathy) Sikes of Bloomingdale, Craig Sikes of Alma. Step-daughter, Sarah (Michael)
Mackey of California. Six grandchildren, Britt, Brooks, David, Andy, Alex and Nicholas Sikes.
Seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Visitation and Funeral Service
Visitation will begin at 6:00pm on Wednesday from the Bradley B. Anderson
Funeral Home, Reidsville Chapel.
Funeral Services will be conducted 12:00pm Thursday from the Beulah Baptist
Church in Pembroke with the Reverend Dan Bryant officiating. Interment will follow
in the Northside Cemetery in Pembroke with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Fennell, Michael Fennell, Lloyd Sikes, Albert Hill, David
Norris and Randy Norris.
