Raymond Lee McKelvey, age 76, passed away on Thursday September 19, 2019 at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia after a brief illness. The Missouri native joined the United States Navy after graduation and served honorably for 4 years; including a tour during the Vietnam War. Upon returning stateside, he moved to Savannah by way of Atlanta. While in Savannah he began working for and ultimately retired from Derst Baking Company as a maintenance engineer. After his retirement he moved to Tattnall County to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle. He found great joy in the arts; sculpting and painting. Among his favored subjects were painting portraits and sculpting items found in nature. During his lifetime he completed hundreds of pieces. He was a member of Hope Baptist Church and is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Callie Beatrice McKelvey.
Left to cherish a life well lived are his children, Scott Phillips of Summerville SC and Kathy Hamidi of Alexandria VA; grandchildren, Brittnay Cook, Samantha Garrett, and Scott A. Phillips, II; great grandchildren, Nola Edwards and Grayson Hurst; a sister, Beverly Weeks; other friends and relatives also survive.
A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, September 30, 2019 at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Rev. David Moxley will officiate with honors rendered by the United States Navy.
