Roscoe Smith

Mr. Roscoe Smith also known to many as “Smitty” or “Junior” was born on June 14, 1933 in Evans County, GA to the late Roscoe Smith, Sr and Pearl Manker Smith.  He departed this life on June 26, 2021, at Community Hospice in Vidalia, GA.  He was educated in the Evans County School System.  At an early age he joined New Bethel Baptist Church, Reidsville, GA.  He joined the United States Air Force in 1952.  He was the 5th child out of 7 children.  He was united in Holy Matrimony on July 28, 1953, to Dorothy Mincey Smith, to this union two children were born.  He was stationed many places, San Antonio, TX, Alabama, Valdosta, Indiana, Philippines, England, and Japan.  He also flew Air Vac as a medic during the Vietnam War, then retired after 20 years of service in May 1972.  He also retired for the second time working for the Civil Service at Winn Army Hospital as a health technician in the physical exam section.  He was also an LPN.  After retiring from the military, he settled in Bellville, GA.  He joined Oak Grove AME Church, Manassas, GA where he faithfully served as a Steward, Trustee, Secretary, Sunday School Teacher and as the Superintendent.  He was also a member of the Sons of Allen, Sixth Episcopal District. He loved music, golf, and tennis.

Roscoe Smith was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Dorothy Lott, Eva Palmer, and Trudie Mae Malate and 3 brothers, McKinley Smith, Tyrone Smith, and Robert Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory, 2 daughters, Brenda Smith Benjamin of Hagan, GA and Kimberly Smith of Bellville, GA; 2 grandchildren, Tulea Benjamin and Quadre Smith; 2 great grandchildren, Brenae Cross and Quadre Smith, Jr.; 3 sisters in law, Eva K. Mincey of Manassas, Bobbie S. Mincey of Collins, GA, and Rose Smith of Miami, Fl.  He will also be missed by host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Thomas Grove AME Church in Claxton from the hours of 4:00pm to 6:00pm.  Funeral services will be conducted 2:00pm Saturday also at Thomas Grove AME Church.  Interment military honors will be 1:00pm on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.

Pallbearers will be Bennie Palmer, Delmar Mincey, Jr., Thomas Mincey, Dale Mincey, Bennie Haynes, and Douglas Mincey.

Low Country Cremation and Burial is serving the Smith family.
