Sandra Mabie Caldeira (Sandy) died peacefully on September 23rd, 2018, at her home in Sun City, Bluffton, SC. She had breast cancer that had metastasized.

Sandy was born in Syracuse, NY on July 11, 1936 and graduated from Onondaga Central High School in 1953. She went on to Oswego State University, graduating in 1957 with a degree in elementary education. It was there that she met her husband Don. Upon graduating, Sandy taught first and second grade. Once she became a mother, Sandy stayed at home to care for her children for several years while substitute teaching. Eventually she returned to work full time and had a 21-year-long career at the Central New York Police Academy, which she loved. She was also treasurer of the New York State Law Enforcement Training Directors Association for a term.

Don and Sandy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last month. Syracuse was their home for 40 years, but they escaped the harsh winters in September 2001. They have loved their lives in Sun City for the past 17 years, where Sandy enjoyed line dancing, square dancing, playing mah jongg and socializing with her friends.

Sandy is predeceased by her parents Donald Mabie and Mildred Hull Mabie, and her son Gregory Martin Caldeira. She is survived by her husband Donald M. Caldeira, sister Janet and her husband Harold “Pop” Annable, their four children Tim, Jon, Jill, and Dan and their families, daughter Lisa and son-in-law Dan Southwick of Apex, NC, daughter Christine and partner Lisa Hern of San Francisco, CA and daughter-in-law Amy Caldeira of Fabius, NY. She is survived by seven grandchildren: Derek Caldeira and Colin, Kelsey, Graham, Anna, Cameron and Gracie Southwick.

A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held on Saturday, November 3rd from 2-5 pm at Riverbend Lodge of Sun City, 39 Tidewatch Drive, Okatie, SC.
