June 20, 1931 — February 17, 2018

Reidsville,

On February 17, 2018, William Hamilton “Bill” Carswell died suddenly at his home in the Altamaha Community of Tattnall County, Georgia. He was born on June 20, 1931, in Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia, to James Hamilton Carswell and Lee Alma Patrick Carswell.

He attended North Georgia College before transferring to the University of Georgia, from which he was graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While attending both institutions, he participated in their ROTC programs, earning a commission in the United States Army. During the time that he was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia, he met Ann Morris, a civilian employee of the Army, who later became his wife. They were married for more than 62 years.

His principal occupations were in the fields of banking and commercial printing in Quitman and Valdosta, Georgia.

He pursued a wide range of personal interests and excelled in all of them, including photography, welding and joining, restoration of antique farm equipment, farm toys, firearms, horticulture, genealogy, and travel. He was especially fond of the numerous cats and dogs who came to live at his home, whether they were initially invited to do so or not.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Eugene Patrick Carswell, and his son-in-law, John Justin Howard. He is survived by his wife, Ann Morris Carswell, and his daughter, Teresa Carswell Howard, both of Reidsville. Numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive, along with many friends.

A member of Pearson's Chapel United Methodist Church, he was also an affiliate member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Magna Charta Barons, the Plantagenet Society, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was the Organizing President of the Valdosta Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution and later served as Southwest Georgia Vice President of that organization. Although he was not a hunter, in recent years he enjoyed the friendship of the members of the Clear Water Supper Club, and was a regular at their Thursday night suppers.

His family will welcome friends to a visitation at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, February 22, at the Reidsville United Methodist Church, located at 121 N. Brazell Street. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Joyce-McArthur Cemetery, 5830 Old River Road, Reidsville, Georgia 30453.
