Reidsville GA
William Louie Smith, Sr., age 92, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 26, 2017. The Reidsville native was a lifelong Tattnall County resident. To say that he loved his community would be to understate his dedication to the place he called home. Mr. Louie was a longtime member of the Reidsville Lions Club, a Mason, and member of the Reidsville Historical Society. He was also instrumental in the founding of Pinewood Christian Academy. Additionally, he was a longtime member of the Reidsville Baptist Church; where he served as Chairman of the Deacons for many years. In his professional career, he was employed with the United States Postal Service and served as Postmaster in Reidsville for over 26 years. Through his professional efforts, he was bestowed with an honorary degree from Georgia Southern University. As a man who believed in work, work, and more work; he also made running his farm a second job. He did manage to fit in time for his favorite hobby, Georgia Southern football. After a lifetime of hard work and dedication to his family, he will be sorely missed. He is preceded in death by his wife of over 49 years, Joan Miller Smith, a son Rufus Michael Smith, and 2 brothers James Winton Smith and Tietgen Smith.
He is survived by his son, William Louie (Connie) Smith, Jr. of Reidsville; daughter, Lou Ann Smith Phillips of Reidsville; one sister, Alma Smith Mitcham of Ludowici; sister in law, Joyce Davis Smith of Reidsville; 3 grandchildren, Domini Smith (David) Horne, William David (Tabitha) Smith, and Dane William Brown; numerous nieces and nephews, and a community of friends also survive.
