Mr. Willie Joseph “WJ” Mitchell was born in Screven County Georgia on August 24, 1930, to the loving parents of the late Nash and Ada Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was educated in Glennville Georgia and soon gave his life to Christ at an early age. He joined First African Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully until his dying day. Mr. Mitchell met the love of his life Laura Agnes Sanders. They were married on June 8, 1957. They celebrated 48 years of marriage until she was called home on June 9, 2005. As members of First African Missionary Baptist Church, Mr. Mitchell and his lovely wife sang together in the church choir. They both enjoyed doing many activities together including singing, fishing, gardening and spending time with their beautiful family. He was employed with Tatum Brothers Logging for many years. In his later years, Mr. Mitchell became a resident of the Glenvue Nursing Home. He made many friends and loved being a part of their community. He’s had a special bond with his great niece and CARE worker Miss Brittany Strickland of Glenville Georgia. He was preceded in death by his children, Annette Patricia Mitchell, Willie Alfred Mitchell; son-in-law, Dan Singleton; brothers, Leroy (Elizabeth) Mitchell, Nash (Wilma) Mitchell, Jr., Andrew “AW” (Vera Q.) Mitchell and 4 sisters.
He is survived by his children, Karen Singleton of Glennville, Wayne (Latoya) Mitchell of Chicago, Illinois, Paul (Trisha) Mitchell of Florida and Kenneth Mitchell of Glennville; 21 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives.
Visitation will be from 6:00pm-8:00pm, Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00am, Thursday, June 20, 2019 from First African Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Glennville Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Noah Hill, Jr., Marvin Hill, Joe Sanders, Jr., Kenneth Sharpe, Orlin Strickland, Samuel Hill.
